Have you ever considered racing alongside your dog in the great outdoors? If not, 2025 might be the perfect year for you and your furry companion to try something new. Thanks to Trail Paws Adventures, an organization dedicated to canine fitness and bonding through canicross, dog owners across the UK have an exciting way to combine fitness, fun, and outdoor exploration.
What is a Yellow Dog?
A Yellow Dog refers to a dog that needs space from other dogs or people due to reasons such as anxiety, health issues, or specific training requirements. The term comes from the Yellow Dog UK initiative, which uses yellow ribbons to signal that these dogs should not be approached without permission. This simple yet effective system promotes safer and more comfortable interactions for dogs and their owners during walks or events.
What is Canicross?
Canicross is the exhilarating sport of trail running with your dog, where you’re connected via a harness and bungee line. It’s not only a great workout for both of you but also a chance to strengthen your bond while exploring stunning UK trails.
Trail Paws Adventures takes this sport a step further by offering a supportive environment for all participants, including beginner runners and dogs that require extra space. Their partnership with Yellow Dog UK ensures a safe and welcoming atmosphere for dogs who “need space” through the use of yellow ribbons, raising awareness among participants and passersby.
Upcoming Canicross Sessions
Mark your calendars for these upcoming events in 2025:
- 26th January: Royston, Hertfordshire
- 23rd February: Royston, Hertfordshire
- 23rd March: Buckinghamshire
Each session begins at 9:30 AM, with a focus on fun, fitness, and confidence-building for both runners and their dogs. While the standard distance is 5k, walking is encouraged, making these events accessible to all fitness levels. Participating dogs should be at least 12 months old, in good health, and ready to enjoy this unique bonding experience.

A Yellow Dog-Friendly Initiative
Yellow Dog UK, a movement focused on supporting dogs that need space, plays a key role in these events by providing yellow ribbons and fostering awareness. At a broader level, Yellow Dog UK made an impact in 2024 as one of the unsung heroes recognized at the All-party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group (APDAWG) event at the Houses of Parliament.
Alison Gibson-Stark, a key representative, shared Yellow Dog’s mission to promote safer, stress-free dog walking through the universal recognition of yellow ribbons. As a result of these efforts, several organizations, including veterinary clinics like Marc Abraham’s surgery, have adopted special “nervous” areas for dogs in need.

Embrace Adventure with Your Four-Legged Friend
Whether you’re an experienced runner or just starting your fitness journey, canicross offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the outdoors, meet like-minded dog owners, and deepen your connection with your pup.
