Upcoming British artists Night Hymns combines classic rock songwriting influences and harder sounds to create the new single Blue Bottle. Blue Bottle will be available on all streaming platforms on the 3rd of April, 2023.
What inspired you to create Blue Bottle?
“My wanderlust first of all, the secret wish to throw everything out of the window and just get on the road.But if you ask me to dig deeper, there is a bit of influence from both sides of the Atlantic, especially in the lyrics. I got the idea in a cafe called “Blue Bottle” on a trip to San Francisco. The name just tickled me because it reminded me of a fat fly, probably because the cafe was not located in the tidiest corner of the city.
On the other hand, the poet William Blake has written a poem called “The Fly” in his Songs of Experience, and I have always found the finishing lines amusing ( “Then am I / A happy fly / If I live / Or if I die). So when I saw the name “Blue Bottle” I immediately decided to write my own anthem about a happy fly.”
Can you tell us more about your musical influences and how you created your unique sound?
“As I mentioned above, there are influences from both sides of the Atlantic, but oddly I tend to write straight off my head about things that tickled me instead of thinking of my influences. For this one, words and music almost came out side by side. Obviously the name Blue Bottle came first, because I simply decided to write about a fat fly. But the lyrics were the last to be finished. They always took hours and hours.
I can talk about influences in a more specific way, though. For example, my guitar playing is inspired by Johnny Marr’s style, although I cannot actually sound like the Smiths.”
Do you have a track that shines out as a favourite to play live?
“Probably my next single (to be called “Drink to Me”). It will be drunken guitar pop, a great track to sing and dance to in my opinion. But “Blue Bottle” will sound great live, too, if played with a band.”
How would you describe your music to a potential fan?
“21st-Century Swagger. It’s familiar but completely new.”
Who would you love to collaborate on a project with?
“Johnny Marr, Liam Gallagher”
What does the future hold for you?
“Anywhere between right here waiting to over the rainbow. But all I can do is keep on writing.”
