The sound of a metal door shifting in the wind became the unlikely starting point for What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?, the forthcoming album from Australian composer Dale Cornelius. Recorded during a late-night walk past the Concattedrale di San Salvatore in Montalcino, Italy, the sound caught his attention for its strange, percussive character. It subsequently became a central motif in the title track and an inspiration for the album’s wider exploration of memory and place.
Scheduled for release in October 2026, the six-track project features Melbourne-based Eclective Strings alongside synthesizers and found sound. Cornelius has used Dolby Atmos to recreate the spatial experience of the original field recording, placing the listener within a soundscape surrounded by the quartet and electronic elements. A stereo version will also be available, with the album running for approximately 31 minutes.
The project’s emotional material is as important as its sense of physical space. ‘In This Moment, What Matters Most?’ takes its name from a reminder Cornelius used while caring for his mother and managing anxiety. ‘A Whispered Dawn (Spencer’s Lullaby)’ reaches further into his past: it was composed in 1999 during his son’s precarious early life. Previously unrecorded, the quartet work now sits alongside newer compositions, bringing together music from two different periods in the composer’s life.
Cornelius’s experience with immersive work includes projects for the Australian Pavilions at the Shanghai and Nagoya World Expos, as well as scores for IMAX documentaries such as Hidden Universe and The Great Barrier Reef. His new album applies that interest in sound and space to a more intimate subject. What began as an incidental recording on an Italian street has developed into a chamber cycle shaped by personal history, grief and renewal.
